Education
and work

As part of its program, the Bildungswerk Hospiz Elias always wants to appreciate the special day. Celebrating together is part of this. What’s more, it’s even important. It creates awareness and a lightness that is needed if you want to approach topics such as dying, death and grief constructively and without fear of contact.
We would like to reach out to those moments and all the people who share them with us with extraordinary events. We cordially invite you!

Santeria – Afrodiasporic Religion in Cuba on 18.07. at 7 pm: Speaker:
Dr. Hauke Dorsch – Institute for Ethnology and African Studies at the University of Mainz

With the brutal displacement of hundreds of thousands of people from Africa to the Americas, the cultural and religious landscape on the double continent was permanently changed. One expression of Afro-American religiosity is the tradition known as “Santería” or “Regla de Ocha”, which fuses deities from the West African Yoruba pantheon with Catholic saints. As an important support for Afro-Cubans, it survived the state-decreed atheism after the Cuban revolution in 1959 and is now more popular than ever. The lecture will provide an insight into the world of Santería with examples from everyday life, music, literature and the visual arts.

The speaker is a lecturer at the Institute for Ethnology and African Studies at the University of Mainz and director of the Archive for the Music of Africa and conducts research into West African music, integration policy in Germany and Cuban-African relations.

The event will take place at Hospiz Elias, Steiermarkstr. 12, 67065 Ludwigshafen.
Admission is free! We look forward to seeing you!
