When life
teaches us …
All patients leave us with a totality of experiences. It is a precious lesson at the deathbeds that focuses on the life lived until the end. In order to convey this focus to the public and to give topics such as grief, farewell and death their rightful place, we founded the Hospiz Elias educational organization in 2008.
… That death is part of it
We hope that the topics of life, dying, death and mourning will become an integral part of social discourse.
In its work, the educational institution aims to provide further education, training and empowerment. Healthcare workers, relatives, but also interested parties or school classes find a place to meet and learn together in seminars, events, courses and theme evenings.
Our goal: We want to raise commitment and awareness to help shape and spread the idea of hospice and palliative care.
In doing so, we reflect on our role as a public actor in the overall social discourse. For us, this means that we understand the idea of hospice as an attitude that goes beyond the work in our institution. It essentially encompasses the solidarity of people towards and with each other.
We therefore advocate diversity, respect and acceptance both internally and externally and oppose discrimination based on religious or cultural background, origin, skin color, sexual and gender identity or disability. This attitude is also reflected in our events.
“Hospice work is an attempt to think and feel the end of the cycle of life and to accompany a small part of the journey.”
Gabriele Kettenhofen
Palliative care:
A thought experiment
The term palliative care is derived from the Latin “pallium”, which corresponds to a kind of cloak or mantle. “Care” comes from the English and means ‘care’, but it encompasses more: ‘take care of you’ means ‘I’ll look after you’. And: “care for you” means “I care about you”
Or also: “you are important to me”.
Imagine a warm, protective coat that does not weigh too heavily on your shoulders; it is not a burden, but still offers support. Now add up and feel the different interpretations of “care”.
Our seminar and meeting room is located in the new extension to the Elias inpatient hospice and is also the largest room in the administration and event area, which was completed in spring 2017.
We use our new “centerpiece” of the extension for events, workshops, courses and training sessions. The monthly café for mourners has also found a modern, friendly environment here.
